The cover your commercial policy does not reach

A commercial policy protects the business. It does not pay the mortgage if you are not there, replace your income if you cannot work, or put money in your family's hands if the worst happens. That is a separate set of policies, and it is the part people put off, because nobody enjoys thinking about it.

These are paid for by the company rather than out of your own taxed income, and for a director that usually makes them the cheaper way to hold the same cover. The premiums are normally an allowable business expense, and a relevant life policy is not generally treated as a benefit in kind. Your accountant should confirm how it applies to your own set-up.

What happens if you get in touch

We look at what you already have first: cover through work, an old policy, something attached to a mortgage. Often the right answer is to keep it, and we will say so. There is no fee for our advice; we are paid by the insurer if you take a policy out, and we will tell you what that looks like before you decide anything.

Nothing is automatic. You get a recommendation in writing and the time to think about it. If the answer is that you do not need anything, that is a perfectly good outcome.
