    INSURERS WE ARRANGE

National Friendly Protection & Health Cover

A mutual writing protection and health cover. Health products vary enormously in what they actually do, so the useful question is not which insurer but which kind of cover you need.

A Mutual Writing Protection And Health

National Friendly is a friendly society — a mutual owned by its members rather than by shareholders — writing protection alongside health-related cover.

That combination is less common than it sounds. Most protection insurers do not write health cover, and most health insurers do not write protection. Where a single insurer does both, it can be tidy to hold them together, though each is still worth judging on its own merits rather than as a bundle.

The far more important question on this side of the market is which type of health cover you actually need, because two products that sound similar do very different jobs at very different prices.

Cash Plan Or Medical Insurance? They Are Not Rivals

This is the distinction that decides which product will actually help you, and it is worth getting clear before you compare prices.

A health cash plan reimburses everyday costs — dental work, optical, physiotherapy, consultations — up to annual limits in each category. You pay the bill and claim it back. It is built for the routine and the predictable, and it costs a fraction of full medical cover.

Private medical insurance covers private treatment for new conditions arising after the policy starts — consultations, diagnostics, surgery — where the bills run to thousands rather than tens.

A cash plan will not pay for an operation. Medical insurance will not usually pay for your glasses. Buying the cheaper product to solve the more expensive problem is the mistake, and it is only discovered at the point of claiming.

How Health Cover Treats Your Medical History

Health policies handle a medical history differently from life cover, and expecting them to work the same way is a common source of surprise.

Life cover is fully underwritten at application: you declare, the insurer prices, the contract is settled. Health cover is frequently written on a moratorium instead — conditions you have had in a defined period before the policy starts are excluded, but can come back into cover later if you go a set period without symptoms, treatment or advice for them.

That is meaningfully different from a permanent exclusion, and which basis applies changes what the policy is worth to you. It is worth establishing before you buy rather than reading about it afterwards.

Where Health Cover Fits Alongside Protection

Health cover and protection answer different questions, and it helps to be clear which one you are answering.

Health cover is about you — being seen sooner, treated sooner, and back on your feet sooner. Protection is about the people who depend on you: it pays them, or replaces your earnings, when something goes wrong.

There is a real connection between the two, though. Faster treatment can mean a shorter absence from work, which matters most if you are self-employed or have limited sick pay — which is exactly why health cover pairs naturally with income protection. One gets you treated; the other pays you while you are not working.

If the budget only goes so far and people depend on your income, most advisers would deal with the protection first. The consequence of dying or being unable to work uninsured falls on somebody else.

    Common questions

    Who are National Friendly?+

A friendly society writing protection and health cover. Like other mutuals it is owned by its members rather than by shareholders, and like other specialists it concentrates on a narrower range of products than the household-name insurers.

    What does National Friendly offer?+

Protection and health-related cover are what it is known for. Health products in this part of the market vary considerably in what they actually do, so the useful question is not which insurer but which type of cover — a full private medical policy and a health cash plan are very different things.

What is a health cash plan?+

A policy that pays you back a set amount towards everyday healthcare costs — dental treatment, optical, physiotherapy, consultations — usually up to annual limits per category. You pay the bill and claim it back. It is designed for routine, predictable costs rather than for major treatment.

What is the difference between a cash plan and private medical insurance?+

They solve different problems. Private medical insurance covers the cost of private treatment for new conditions that arise after the policy starts — typically consultations, diagnostics and surgery, which can run to thousands. A cash plan reimburses smaller everyday costs up to modest limits. A cash plan will not pay for an operation, and full medical insurance will not usually pay for your glasses.

Which is better value, a cash plan or private medical insurance?+

It depends entirely on what you are worried about. If the concern is waiting months for a diagnosis or an operation, only private medical insurance answers that. If the concern is the steady drip of dental and optical bills for a family, a cash plan can pay for itself and costs a fraction as much. Buying the cheaper one to solve the more expensive problem is the mistake to avoid.

Do friendly societies cover pre-existing conditions?+

Health cover generally handles medical history differently from life cover. Rather than pricing it individually, health policies commonly use a moratorium — conditions you have had in a set period before the policy starts are excluded, though they can come back into cover later if you go a defined period without symptoms or treatment. Check which basis applies before you buy.

Is a mutual as safe as a large insurer?+

Yes. UK insurers are authorised and regulated whatever their size or ownership model, and long-term insurance policies are covered by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme. Choosing a mutual is a decision about product fit and expertise, not a trade against security.

Can you arrange National Friendly cover?+

Yes, it is on our agency list. The premium is the same as arranging it directly, and we are paid commission by the insurer, which is disclosed.

Should I have health cover as well as life insurance?+

They do entirely separate jobs. Life insurance protects the people who depend on your income if you die. Health cover is about you being seen and treated. Neither replaces the other, and if the budget only stretches so far, most people with dependants should secure the protection first — the consequence of dying uninsured falls on someone else.

Does health cover help me get back to work faster?+

Often, and that is an underrated part of the argument. Quicker diagnosis and treatment can mean a shorter absence, which matters a great deal if you are self-employed or have limited sick pay. It pairs naturally with income protection, which pays you while you are off.
