INSURERS WE ARRANGE
Aviva Life Insurance
One of the UK's largest and longest-established insurers, with a protection range covering most of what a family or a business needs. We arrange Aviva cover and make sure it is set up to do the job you are buying it for.
Scale, And What It Actually Buys You
Aviva is one of the largest and longest-established insurers in the United Kingdom, and on a contract that may run for thirty years that counts for something real. You are buying a promise to pay decades from now, and wanting it from an insurer of that size and history is an entirely reasonable instinct.
Scale shows up in practical ways too. An insurer writing an enormous number of policies has well-practised underwriting and processes built for volume, so straightforward applications tend to move quickly. For the common case — a healthy applicant covering a mortgage or protecting a family — that is exactly what you want, and Aviva is regularly competitive on it.
It is also a name your family will recognise, which matters more than people admit. The person who eventually has to make a claim is not you. Making that moment as simple as possible for them is a legitimate reason to choose a well-known insurer.
The Cover Aviva Writes
Aviva's protection range covers most of what a household or a business needs, which is one of the practical arguments for it — several needs can sit with one insurer and one set of paperwork.
Life cover pays a lump sum if you die during the term, written level or decreasing. Critical illness cover pays out on diagnosis of a listed condition, alongside life cover or on its own. Income protection replaces earnings when you cannot work. And there are the business arrangements — relevant life, keyman and shareholder protection — for company directors.
Benefits, definitions and options are reviewed by insurers over time, so the terms that bind are the ones in Aviva's current documentation rather than any summary. We go through the current wording with you before you commit to anything.
Getting An Aviva Policy Set Up Properly
Most of what decides whether a life policy does its job is settled when you take it out, and it has nothing to do with which insurer you chose. This is where we spend our time.
Level or decreasing. Decreasing cover tracks a repayment mortgage down and costs less; level cover stays put, and is what you need if the money is replacing income or clearing an interest-only balance. Picking decreasing purely because it was cheaper is the most common mistake made buying online.
The right sum and the right term. Cover is bought to do a specific job. Working back from that job — the mortgage, the years until the children are independent — usually produces a different figure from the one people first suggest, in both directions.
Writing it in trust. A policy held in trust normally pays outside your estate, which can keep it clear of inheritance tax and get the money to your family without waiting for probate. It is generally free to arrange at outset, and it is routinely missed.
If You Have A Medical History
A large insurer sees a great many medical histories, and Aviva underwrites them as a matter of routine rather than as an exception. A diagnosis does not put cover out of reach — most applicants with a history are offered terms.
Where we add something is in how the application is assembled. The same history reads differently depending on how completely it is presented: recent readings, dates, what treatment there was and what has been stable since. Going in with that gathered tends to produce a better and faster decision than leaving it to be requested piece by piece.
If you have diabetes, a cancer history or a heart condition, it is worth a conversation before you apply anywhere, so it goes in properly first time.
Arranging Aviva Through Us
We hold an agency with Aviva, so we can arrange its cover directly, and the premium is the same as buying from Aviva itself. Commission is paid by the insurer and there is no broker fee on top.
What you get in addition is someone handling the parts that are easy to get wrong: setting the term and sum assured against what you are actually protecting, choosing level or decreasing deliberately, arranging the trust, and presenting any medical history properly. Then being on the end of the phone afterwards, including at claim.
We will also show you Aviva alongside the other insurers we arrange, so the choice is one you can see rather than one you take on trust.
CoverLife is a UK insurance broker and is not Aviva. We can arrange Aviva cover and are paid commission by the insurer; the policy terms that apply are the ones in Aviva's own documentation. See the other insurers we arrange.

Cover that often goes with this
The gaps we most often find sitting next to this one.
- The other insurers we arrangeThe rest of the panel and what each is strongest at, so you can see the choice rather than take it on trust.
- Medical conditionsWhere the choice of insurer stops being about brand and starts being about whose underwriting takes the kindest view of your history.
- Life insuranceSum assured, term, and level versus decreasing — the three decisions that move the premium far more than which insurer you pick.
Common questions
Is Aviva life insurance any good?+
Aviva is one of the largest and longest-established insurers in the UK, with a broad protection range covering life, critical illness, income protection and business cover. For a household protecting a mortgage or a family it is a strong, well-proven choice, and its scale means straightforward applications are handled quickly and its name is one your family will recognise at claim.
Can I get Aviva life insurance through a broker?+
Yes. We hold an agency with Aviva and can arrange its cover, and it costs you no more than going direct because commission is paid by the insurer either way. What you gain is someone setting the policy up properly — the right term and sum assured, level or decreasing chosen deliberately, the trust arranged, and any medical history presented well.
Does Aviva cover pre-existing medical conditions?+
Yes, routinely. A large insurer sees a great many medical histories, and Aviva underwrites them as ordinary business rather than as an exception — most applicants with a history are offered terms. What helps is presenting the history well: recent readings, dates, treatment and what has been stable since. Assembled properly, that tends to produce a better and faster decision.
What types of cover does Aviva offer?+
Aviva writes across the protection range: life cover level or decreasing, critical illness alongside life cover or standalone, income protection, and the business arrangements — relevant life, keyman and shareholder protection. That breadth is genuinely useful, because several needs can sit with one insurer and one set of paperwork.
Is Aviva more expensive than smaller insurers?+
Not necessarily — on standard rates for a healthy applicant the mainstream insurers cluster fairly closely, and Aviva is regularly competitive. Size does not carry a price penalty. What moves a premium far more than the choice of insurer is the sum assured, the term, and whether the cover is level or decreasing, which is where it is worth spending your attention.
Should I buy Aviva life insurance direct from Aviva?+
You can buy direct, and the cover is the same. Arranging it through a broker costs no more and adds the setup: matching the term and sum assured to what you are actually protecting, choosing level or decreasing deliberately, writing the policy in trust, and handling any medical history. Those decisions do more for whether the policy works than anything else you will choose.
Does Aviva life insurance include terminal illness cover?+
Terminal illness benefit is included as standard on most UK life policies, paying the sum assured early where life expectancy is certified as under twelve months. Check your own documentation rather than assuming, and remember it if you already hold cover and your circumstances change — it is frequently overlooked by the people entitled to claim it.
Can Aviva cover be written into trust?+
Life cover can generally be written in trust regardless of insurer, and it is worth considering. A policy held in trust normally pays outside your estate, which can mean it is not subject to inheritance tax and can reach your family faster, without waiting for probate. Whether it suits you depends on your circumstances, and it is a decision to take with advice rather than a box to tick.
How long does an Aviva application take?+
Straightforward applications in good health are often decided quickly, sometimes on the answers alone. What extends the timescale is a request for a GP report, which typically adds a few weeks and depends on how quickly your surgery responds rather than on the insurer.
What happens to my Aviva policy if my health changes?+
Nothing, provided your original answers were accurate. Cover already in force was underwritten and priced on what you disclosed when you applied, and a later diagnosis does not allow the insurer to cancel it or increase the premium for that reason. This is why an existing policy should never be cancelled while you are exploring alternatives.
