    INSURERS WE ARRANGE

    Legal & General Life Insurance

One of the most established names in UK protection, and regularly among the most competitive for mortgage and family cover. Conventional, easy to compare, and a name your family will know.

    Where It Is Genuinely Strong

Legal & General's position in the market is built on doing the ordinary thing well: large-scale, mainstream term assurance for people who want a defined sum for a defined period.

For the common case — a healthy applicant covering a mortgage or protecting a family — it is regularly among the more competitively priced mainstream options, and the product is conventional in a way that makes it easy to compare. There is no mechanism to understand and no behavioural element attached. You buy a sum assured for a term.

That simplicity is a genuine feature. Not everyone wants a policy that asks something of them, and for a lot of buyers the right answer is the plain one.

Level Or Decreasing: The Decision People Get Wrong

This is not specific to L&G — it applies market-wide — but it is the mistake we see most often on policies bought directly, and it is worth being blunt about.

Decreasing cover falls over the term, tracking a repayment mortgage down. It is cheaper because the amount at risk shrinks each year. It is the right answer for a repayment mortgage and only that.

Level cover stays put. If the money is meant to replace your income, pay for childcare, or clear an interest-only mortgage where the balance never falls, level is what you need — and buying decreasing because it was cheaper leaves a shortfall that grows every year and is invisible until it is claimed on.

Comparison sites present these side by side with the cheaper one first. That is the whole problem in one sentence.

How A Medical History Is Handled

L&G writes at scale, which means it underwrites medical histories constantly and has well-practised guidance for them. A diagnosis in your past does not put cover out of reach, and most applicants with a history are offered terms.

What makes the difference is how the history reaches the underwriter. Dates, recent readings, what treatment there was and what has been stable since all shape the decision, and an application that arrives with those assembled tends to be settled faster and on better terms than one that has to be pieced together by request.

That is the part we do. If you have a cancer history or a cardiac history, talk to us before applying anywhere so it goes in properly the first time.

Going Through A Broker Costs You Nothing Extra

A point worth making plainly, because people assume otherwise: arranging L&G cover through us does not cost more than buying it from L&G. The insurer pays commission either way, and it is disclosed.

What you gain is the setup. Matching the term and the sum assured to what you are actually protecting, choosing level or decreasing deliberately, getting the policy written in trust, and presenting any medical history so it is underwritten on the first attempt. Those decisions do more for whether the policy works than the choice of insurer does.

And someone on the end of the phone afterwards — at the point a claim is made, which is the only moment any of this is actually tested.

CoverLife is a UK insurance broker and is not Legal & General. We can arrange Legal & General cover and are paid commission by the insurer; the policy terms that apply are the ones in Legal & General's own documentation. See the other insurers we arrange.

Arrange It Through Us, At The Same Price

Arranging L&G through us costs no more than going direct, and the term, the sum assured, the trust and any medical history are handled by someone who does it every day.

    Common questions

Is Legal & General life insurance any good?+

It is one of the largest and longest-established life insurers in the UK, and its term assurance is a mainstream, well-proven product. For mortgage and family protection it is regularly among the more competitive options, the product is conventional and easy to compare, and it is a name your family will recognise if they ever have to claim on it.

What is Legal & General decreasing life insurance?+

Cover whose sum assured reduces over the term, designed to track a repayment mortgage down as the balance falls. Because the amount at risk falls each year, it costs less than level cover for the same starting figure. It suits repayment mortgages. It does not suit interest-only mortgages, or cover intended to replace income for a family, because in both of those cases the need does not decrease.

Does Legal & General offer critical illness cover?+

Yes, both alongside life cover and as part of a combined policy. As with any insurer, the thing that decides its value is the policy wording — which conditions are listed and, more importantly, how each is defined. The number of conditions is the least useful figure in any brochure, because a shorter list with broad definitions can pay out where a longer list with narrow ones does not.

Is Legal & General cheaper than other insurers?+

On simple term assurance for someone in good health it is regularly among the more competitive mainstream options, which is a large part of why it writes so much of this business. What moves a premium further than the choice of insurer is the sum assured, the term and whether the cover is level or decreasing — worth getting right before comparing prices at all.

Can I get Legal & General cover through a broker?+

Yes, and it costs you no more than going direct — the commission comes from the insurer either way. What you get in addition is the comparison against the rest of the market, which is the part you cannot do from inside one insurer's website.

    Does Legal & General cover pre-existing conditions?+

Yes. Writing at scale means L&G underwrites medical histories constantly rather than treating them as exceptions, and most applicants with a history are offered terms. What helps the decision is a well-presented application — dates, recent readings, treatment and what has been stable since — which is the part we handle for you.

What is the difference between level and decreasing term with Legal & General?+

Level cover keeps the same sum assured throughout, so the payout in year one is the payout in year twenty. Decreasing cover reduces over the term. The distinction is not about the insurer — it applies market-wide — and it is the single most common thing people get wrong when buying online, because decreasing looks cheaper without it being clear what has been given up.

Does Legal & General include terminal illness cover?+

Terminal illness benefit is included as standard on most UK life policies, paying the sum assured early where life expectancy is certified as under twelve months. It is worth confirming on your own documentation rather than assuming, and worth remembering if you already hold a policy and circumstances change — it is frequently overlooked by the people entitled to claim it.

Can Legal & General cover be used for a business?+

Yes. Business protection arrangements such as relevant life, keyman and shareholder cover are part of the mainstream market, and L&G writes personal life, combined life and critical illness and income protection alongside them. Business cases are worth arranging with advice, because the tax treatment and the trust arrangements matter as much as the premium.

How long does a Legal & General application take?+

Straightforward applications in good health are often decided quickly, sometimes immediately on the answers given. What extends it is a request for a GP report, which typically adds a few weeks and depends on how quickly the surgery responds. That timescale is a function of the NHS practice rather than the insurer.
