Business Protection For Gas And Heating Businesses

Gas is one of the few trades where doing the work without the right registration is not merely unwise, it is unlawful.

Businesses register with Gas Safe Register and the registration rests on engineers holding current certificates of competence for the work they carry out. There is no way to cover the gap with willing but unqualified labour.

Which makes the shape of the business the thing that decides how bad a loss is.

    The short answer

Gas work in the UK must be carried out by a Gas Safe registered business with qualified engineers, and the registration depends on those individuals holding current qualifications. In a one-person business the registration and the person are effectively the same thing, so losing them does not reduce capacity, it ends the ability to do gas work at all. Key person cover funds the gap while that is resolved.

    Registration Depends On Qualified Individuals

Gas Safe registration is held by a business, and it rests on engineers who hold current certificates of competence for the categories of gas work being carried out. The registration reflects who is qualified to do what.

If the qualified engineer in a small business dies or becomes unable to work, the business cannot lawfully carry out the gas work that depended on them, and Gas Safe Register needs to be told about changes to registered engineers. What is required and over what period is a matter for Gas Safe Register and the relevant regulations rather than for us.

For a sole trader this is absolute: the registration and the person are the same thing, so the business simply cannot do gas work. For a firm with several engineers it is a question of which categories are still covered, and whether the person lost held qualifications nobody else does, which is common for commercial, catering or LPG work.

Nothing here is regulatory advice. Gas Safe Register is the authority on registration, and this page is about the money.

What happens in the weeks afterwards

    1. 1Gas Safe Register is informed of the change to registered engineers
    2. 2Work in any category only that person was qualified for stops immediately
    3. 3Subcontracting to another registered business becomes the short-term answer, at their margin rather than yours
    4. 4Recruitment begins for a qualified engineer, including any specialist categories that were lost
    5. 5Service contracts and landlord safety certificate work still fall due, with dates attached
    6. 6Van finance, tools, wages and any loan continue throughout

The Specialist Categories Are The Hidden Dependency

In a firm with several engineers, the assumption is that losing one is absorbable. That depends entirely on what they were qualified for.

Domestic natural gas competence is widely held. Commercial, catering, LPG, warm air and certain appliance categories are not, and a firm often has exactly one person carrying those certificates. Lose them and the work in those categories stops even though the business is still registered and still trading.

That is worth auditing before it matters: which categories does only one person hold, and what proportion of turnover depends on them. It is also the figure to size key person cover against, rather than the whole business.

Service Contracts Have Dates That Do Not Move

This sector's work is partly calendar-driven, which changes how quickly a loss turns into lost customers.

Landlord gas safety checks and annual boiler services fall due on a date. A landlord with a certificate expiring next week cannot wait for your recovery; they will instruct somebody else, and that somebody else now has their details and their boiler history.

So the exposure is the book rather than the month. Cover can be sized to include the cost of subcontracting the service round to keep it intact, which protects the asset instead of simply replacing a few weeks of income.

    Which cover does what here

    Key person cover

Funds subcontracting at somebody else's margin, recruitment of a qualified engineer, and the cost of holding service contracts together while neither has happened.

    Key person income protection

A hand injury or a back problem removes an engineer's ability to work without anything happening to the registration. This covers the business during that absence.

    Shareholder protection

Where there are two or three engineer-directors, this provides the money for the survivors to buy the share rather than running the business with a family member who cannot do the work.

    Relevant life cover

The personal side. A limited company employing the engineer can hold life cover on them rather than them paying from taxed income.

    Common questions

What happens if the only Gas Safe registered engineer dies?+

The business cannot lawfully carry out the gas work that depended on them, and Gas Safe Register needs to be told about changes to registered engineers. For a sole trader the registration and the person are effectively the same thing.

We have several engineers. Are we covered?+

It depends on categories. Domestic natural gas competence is widely held; commercial, catering and LPG often sit with exactly one person. Audit which categories only one engineer holds and what share of turnover depends on them.

    Can insurance keep us registered?+

No. A policy does not produce a qualified engineer or satisfy Gas Safe Register. What the money does is pay for subcontracting at somebody else's margin, recruitment, and keeping service contracts intact meanwhile.

What happens to our service round?+

It has dates attached. A landlord with a certificate expiring next week will instruct somebody else, who then has the customer's details and boiler history. The exposure is the book rather than the month, which is worth sizing cover against.

What if an engineer is injured rather than killed?+

The registration is unaffected and the capacity is gone, which is the commoner situation. Key person income protection covers the business during a long absence, and it is a different policy from key person life cover.
