    Income Protection For Private Tutors

Tutoring is a profession where the product is an hour of attention delivered out loud.

The work is booked in weekly slots that follow the school calendar, so it is busy from September and almost absent in August. Some of it happens at a kitchen table in somebody else's house and a growing share online.

That makes the income shape as important as the health risks, and both get overlooked.

    The short answer

Private tutors earn by talking, in sessions booked around a school term, usually self-employed and often in a client's home or online. Three things shape cover: the voice, the fact that income collapses outside term time, and that a cancelled session is simply gone. Income protection replaces part of your earnings if illness or injury stops you working.

    What actually stops you working

    • Voice problems, since the work is sustained speaking and there is no quiet version of a lesson
    • Hearing difficulty, which affects a one-to-one session directly
    • Mental health problems, which are a real feature of isolated self-employed work with exam-pressure clients
    • Musculoskeletal problems from sustained sitting, screen work for online lessons, and carrying materials
    • Road traffic accidents, for tutors travelling between home visits
    • Any condition affecting concentration, because the hour has to be prepared and delivered
    • Vision problems, where marking written work is part of the job

Sick pay, if you get any

Almost all tutors are self-employed, charging per session, so there is no sick pay. A cancelled session is not rescheduled into a busier week, it is simply not earned, and a run of absences in exam season costs disproportionately because that is when demand peaks.

Why the definition of incapacity decides it

Own occupation is the definition that fits, because the capability is narrow: speaking clearly for an hour at a time, repeatedly. Somebody who cannot do that is employable in plenty of work and cannot tutor, which an any occupation policy would treat as fit for work.

    A Term-Time Income Needs A Full-Year Figure

This is the thing most tutors get wrong when buying cover, and it causes problems at claim rather than at purchase.

Tutoring earns most of its money between September and June, with a spike before exams and almost nothing in August. Insuring a figure based on a busy term looks sensible and will not be supported, because benefit is normally measured against actual earnings.

So protect a defensible annual figure from accounts, averaged across the quiet months. The flip side matters more here than in most work: being signed off in May costs several times what the same six weeks would cost in July, which is an argument for a short deferred period rather than a long one.

    The Voice Is The Product

This is shared with interpreters and teachers and is worth stating plainly on a page about tutoring.

A lesson is an hour of speaking, and several lessons back to back is several hours. Laryngitis, a vocal cord problem or anything affecting the voice stops the work rather than slowing it, because there is no quiet version of teaching.

Online tutoring softens some of this and not much: the speaking is the same, and the sound quality matters more rather than less. It is worth describing the work as what it is, because an insurer classifying tutoring as clerical is not pricing the dependency that would actually stop the earning.

    If you stop

A family with a child preparing for an exam cannot wait, so they find another tutor, and once a new routine is established they rarely come back. The weekly slot is the asset and it is held by habit.

What A Household Is Left With In This Work

Self-employed tutors have no death in service, so the household has only what has been arranged privately.

There is no business to realise either: the client list is a set of weekly slots held by relationship and habit, and it does not transfer to anybody else.

The sum worth covering is the mortgage or rent commitment, any finance, and the years of income a household would need, sized against a genuine annual figure rather than a busy term.

A Lump Sum When You Cannot Teach

The events that end this work are usually a permanent voice or hearing problem, or a condition affecting concentration and stamina.

Either leaves somebody well in general terms and unable to deliver the hour that pays, which is the clearest case of being employable and unable to earn what they did.

A lump sum funds a move the knowledge supports: writing and resource creation, examining and marking, online course production, or school-based teaching with the employment that comes with it.

    Common questions

    How should I insure a term-time income?+

From a defensible annual figure in your accounts, averaged across the quiet months, because benefit is normally measured against actual earnings. A figure based on a busy term will not be supported at claim.

    What deferred period suits tutoring?+

Usually a short one, and shorter than the annual average suggests. Being signed off in May costs several times what the same period costs in July, and there is no sick pay behind self-employed tutoring.

    Can a self-employed tutor get income protection?+

Yes, and it is worth describing the work as sustained speaking rather than accepting a clerical classification, because the voice is what would actually stop the earning.

Does online tutoring change the risks?+

Less than people expect. The speaking is the same and the sound quality matters more rather than less. It removes the travelling, which is a genuine benefit, and not the voice dependency.

What happens to my students if I am off?+

A family with a child preparing for an exam cannot wait, so they find another tutor, and once a new routine is established they rarely come back. The weekly slot is the asset and it is held by habit.

If you run the business as well: there is cover a company can hold and pay for rather than you funding it from taxed income, and cover that buys out an owner's share if one of you dies. Which applies depends on how you are set up, and it is worth five minutes.
